Come and experience our farm

We grow the things that make people happy, and do the things that make nature happy.

So much to enjoy

Come and enjoy a quintessential farm experience. From the abundant trees and wildlife to our flower field and vintage barn, we think you will love it here as much as we do. We have many plants, from fruit-bearing trees and shrubs like crabapples, Nanking cherries and Saskatoons, to spruce, aspen, willow, elm, birch, and pine, among others. The diversity of plant species attracts a variety of wildlife. In particular, we have many species of birds, including finches, woodpeckers, meadowlarks, wrens, chickadees, mourning doves, blackbirds, and warblers. Last year a pair of great horned owls blessed us with a set of owlets.

Bring your family or come with your girlfriends and enjoy a morning or evening visit. Go home with a beautiful hand-cut bouquet or a bundle of freshly-picked herbs.

Our story

We are located just outside of High River, on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Blackfoot people. We acknowledge the many First Nations people who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations, as well as the past stewards of this property who had the foresight to plant a diverse variety of trees, shrubs, and other plants. Our goal is to continue this heritage. We are developing our farm using regenerative and permaculture principles, with the aim of increasing our biodiversity, attracting pollinators and other wildlife, showing leadership in agriculture, growing crops that improve well-being, and crafting experiences that strengthen our visitors’ connection with the land.

Your host

Hi! I’m Jolanda. Welcome to Tierra Flores - I look forward to meeting you!

I am often reminded of the time when I was in university and had the privilege of meeting the incomparable Lois Hole, who is well-known to Alberta gardeners. After chatting with her for a little while and telling her about my Dutch heritage I told her that I had applied for a summer job at her garden centre in St. Albert. She remarked “Oh, a Dutch girl - you would be so good with the flowers!”

While I didn’t end up working at Hole’s Greenhouse, I think Lois knew what she was talking about! After being employed for many years as a special events manager and then developing my expertise as a kitchen designer and running a successful cabinetry company, I am now pursuing my dream of building a flower and herb farm. I love how they appeal to all the senses - who doesn’t delight in the smell and taste of freshly cut herbs? Or the beauty of a flower with bees buzzing around it?

I am excited to share my passion and our beautiful farm with you. I think Lois was right - it is in my blood <3

What we’re growing

Cut Flowers

We grow a large selection of specialty cut flowers. While the varieties we plant vary from year to year, here are some examples of what we are growing: amaranth, celosia, echinacea, feverfew, globe thistle, gomphrena, nigella, rudbeckia, scabiosa, sea holly, snapdragon, statice, stock, strawflowers, sunflowers, sweet peas, yarrow, and zinnias.

Culinary Herbs

There is nothing like fresh herbs to add flavour to your meals. We grow a number of culinary herbs including several types of basil, cilantro, dill, a variety of mints, oregano, rosemary, sage, and thyme.

Medicinal Herbs

We grow many plants known for their naturally-occurring phytochemicals (“phyto” comes from the Greek word for “plant”). Some of the medicinal herbs we grow include ashwagandha, calendula, catnip, chamomile, clary sage, echinacea, holy basil, lavender, lemon balm, lemon verbena, peppermint, motherwort, passionflower, scullcap, valerian, and yarrow. Perfect for drying, or blending the perfect cup of tea.
